Welcome to ukbroadbandproviders broadband guide.
This guide is intended to provide a brief introduction to the many benefits of broadband. How it works, how it helps you work better as well as advanced uses of broadband for making phone calls for free over the Internet. Some of the issues covered are :-
What is broadband? How can broadband help me work more efficiently? What is VPN? What is Voice Over IP? Can I share my broadband connection with more than one computer?
What is Broadband?
Broadband is an Internet connection that is always on and requires no dial-in to access it for a fixed monthly fee. In most cases, broadband uses your existing telephone line to deliver xDSL access to you computer. xDSL (DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE). Your provider usually provides a simple DSL modem that allows your computer to connect to the Internet and also use your telephone simultaneously. You can also provide your own modem/router etc, but that is the subject of further chapters of this guide. Once connected to broadband you can enjoy faster download speeds, typically 10x 20x or 40x faster than your regular dial-in modem.
How can broadband help me work more efficiently?
Well perhaps the obvious answer firstly is speed, faster downloads and almost instant emails! Faster connection speeds allow you to get more online work done in less time. Apart from speed, broadband bring with it a multitude of exciting possibilities. Free telephone calls, VPN Virtual Private Networking, real time web cameras, online software and games.
What is VPN?
VPN or Virtual Private Networking allows you connect to your files from remote locations. By setting up a VPN dial in connection, your remote PC connects to your home or office PC via a secure “tunnel”, giving you access to all the files and applications on that device.
What is VOIP?
Voice Over IP or VOIP is emerging technology that allows PC’s to make reduced or even free telephone calls. You can even accept calls on your PC via a dedicated land line number, just like a real phone! You don’t even need to have a handset as software handsets are readily available!
Can I share my broadband connection with more than one computer?
Yes! That’s the great thing. Using a simple modem/ router or WIFI router, you can allow more than one computer to share the same connection. They can also share files and folders, even have more than 1 BT land line number assigned to each PC!!!
